Frequent Questions/Answers
Q: Who may attend a Kairos Outside Weekend?
A: Any female, 20 years of age or older, who has a relative and/or friend who is or was incarcerated. Women who did not have the opportunity to attend a Kairos Weekend while incarcerated may also attend. Kairos Outside is NOT limited to those women whose relatives/friends have attended a Kairos Weekend. The Weekend is not co-ed.
Q: I do not have an incarcerated relative or friend, but I am involved in prison ministry or may be interested in serving on a Kairos Outside Team. May I attend a Weekend?
A: Please contact the Guest Coordinator for more information on how you may attend a Weekend or serve on a Team by emailing us.
Q: How much does it cost to attend?
A: There is no cost to our Guests. The funds are provided by local Christian communities.
Q: What happens at a Kairos Outside Weekend?
A: The Weekend is a series of Talks by women sharing their life's journey. Each Guest has the opportunity to review the Talk in a small group. The program is interspersed with music, prayer, fun activities, good food, and general pampering. The Weekend is Christian in nature, and no church affiliation is necessary to attend.
Q: Who presents a Kairos Outside Weekend?
A: The Team comes from many different Christian denominations and is committed to ministering to inmates and their families. Several of the Team members are wives and mothers of inmates. The Team is made up of 25-30 women, Clergy-women, and several men that pray, and serve meals during the Weekend.
Q: Do I have to be a Christian to attend?
A: No! All we ask is that you be open to discussion on talks that may be given from a Christian perspective and that you enjoy the entire Weekend.
Q: I don't mind listening, but I don't want to talk about my situation. Can I still attend? Will I be forced to talk with others about my situation?
A: Yes, you can still attend. We do not force anyone to share anything that they are not comfortable with sharing. If you do choose to share, we will listen with love. You might be surprised at the level of understanding and compassion that you will receive from other women who are in similar situations to yours.
Q: So how is this different from a church retreat?
A: The Weekend differs from other renewal/retreat weekends in Christian denominations. The Kairos Outside Weekend is designed for both Christian and non-Christian Guests. Most of these Guests are dealing with very real issues of isolation, rejection, financial hardship, and lonliness. The Talks are relevant to the thoughts, concerns, and feelings of an incarcerated person's loved ones.
